We are all trying to copy the pros to a certain extent, but how close are we? Would you like to compare yourself directly and see yourself on screen skiing side-by- side or overlaid on to a professional.
At the National Site based in Thorpe, we have the capability to achieve this via some clever video analysis software called Dartfish. Dartfish provides the opportunity for skiers to improve their technique by utilising this advanced computer software package designed specifically for sport. A live image is fed directly to a video camera into the computer where it compares the footage and allows it to be played back to the actual speed or slowed down, frame by frame. In addition, a clever piece of kit called a strain gauge can be connected to the programme, to see the loads you are creating and where these loads are taking place.
During playback with the strain gauge, a graph is displayed with numbers showing the value of your load in lbs. In slalom, we can compare you two to three weeks apart, to see if you are achieving your aims and potential.
In jump, we can show you if you are easing up or cutting right through the ramp and give you a direct comparison jump by jump to the professionals.
Previously this has only been accessible to the British squad skiers BUT the time has come to make it available to all. For the special introductory price of £30 you get a 15-minute slot to ski, a 15-minute dartfish run through of you set and a CDROM of your day’s progress. Contact the National Site, Thorpe if you would like to book yourself a technology driven ski session.
Please book in advance as it does take some time to set up the equipment.

Chris Parish exiting 4 ball, you can see the load obtained is 805lbs per square inch. You can also see the peaks and troughs displayed on the graph above.

Scott Ellis cutting into the bottom of the ramp you can see from the graph that he maintains a load all the way into the base of the ramp.

The is a comparison of Scott Ellis and Kyle Eade both cutting into the base of the ramp.
